On Saturday, 2 February 2019, Mayor van Deventer gave her keynote address at the 2019 Blessing of the Harvest Parade in Stellenbosch. The event is now in its seventh year and continues to go from strength to strength. It is fast becoming a highlight on our town calendar and next year promises to be even bigger and better!
Residents and visitors came out in their numbers to support the farm workers and their families who took part in this year’s event. The parade consisted of farm workers and their families, colourful floats, majorettes, bands and groups who work closely with the agricultural sector. Congratulations to the team from Kaapzicht who won the Spirit Award and the team from Delheim who walked away with the award for the Best Float.
This was the first year that a community craft and food market was set up in the Town Hall, allowing farm workers and their families to set up stalls and showcase their talents and handiwork.
Mayor van Deventer thanked the workers for being the backbone of the wine industry and wished them well as the harvest season finally kicks off. She also thanked the Stellenbosch Wine Route for their exceptional work in promoting the wineries of our region – leading to an increase in visitor numbers and vital jobs for our residents.
