Stellenbosch Municipality is shocked about the news of the death of Prof. Russel Botman. Our sincere condolences go out to his wife Beryl, four children, the University of Stellenbosch and the Stellenbosch community.
Botman was an educator, theologian and transformer for the new South Africa. He had a dream to see a transformed, world class university and also launched the Project Hope which aimed to create an inclusive and transformed community free of apartheid and the social and economic challenges the apartheid system presented. Conrad Sidego, mayor of Stellenbosch Municipality, remembers a fruitful relationship with Botman. “Our last official engagement on 8 May 2014 saw us sign a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure a safer University community and town. My last conversation with Russel on 20 June 2014 was about our shared vision for a university and town that is transformed into a safe and inclusive place for all its citizens”, said Sidego.”
Botman had so much more to offer in terms of leadership, a vision for promoting justice, transformation and reconciliation. The world has been left poorer because of his death. We will continue to promote his ideals of freedom, transformation and fight for justice for the underdog.
The University, Stellenbosch, South Africa and the world lost a leader who fought for justice, transformation and reconciliation since his days as a student at the University of the Western Cape.
