Stellenbosch Munisipaliteit

Last night, 22 May 2018, unrest broke out after a community meeting was disrupted by aggrieved residents in Kayamandi. The meeting was aimed at addressing housing challenges, following heightened tensions after incidents of attempted land invasion in the area.

The attempts occurred largely on private agricultural property with the potential of spilling over onto municipal land. The owner of the property as well as the Municipality obtained court interdicts to have the unlawfully erected structures removed.

Service warriors - Pilot project to improve service delivery launched

The Stellenbosch Municipality today formally launched its ground-breaking Service Warrior Project with the Induction of new 11 Service Warriors.

The project is aimed at ensuring that service standards in all areas improve so that water leaks, transgressions, service defects, etc. are reported pro-actively to a central municipal desk from where remedial action can be taken swiftly.

The Warriors have all successfully completed training in basic plumbing at the Bergzicht Training Centre.

This pilot project will be rolled out in Kayamandi, Klapmuts, Groendal/Langrug and Dwarsrivier and is geared towards minimising the turnaround time for service delivery challenges. The project will be expanded to include all areas of the Greater Stellenbosch.

Employing residents from the area as Service Warriors not only contributes to the improvement of service standards in the municipality but also contributes to local job creation.

The project was launched as a joint initiative of Mayor Van Deventer and Deputy Mayor Jindela. The Mayor wished the team well and promised to join them in the field.

Mayor van Deventer said: “We are committed to keep working towards enhancing our service delivery standards until it is a best practice model in South Africa. This is yet another step towards that goal.”
