The new Groendal Library in Franschhoek is a state-of-the-art green building that will provide access and opportunity for learning to the Groendal community. It is also one of the first libraries in the province equipped with a visually impaired section.

The new library replaces the previous container library that served the community since 2007.
Construction began in May 2017. The total cost of this project is R8 663 028.65. Due to the growing needs of the community for a more state of the art facility, the Municipality budgeted for the new library and the Provincial Government made R7 million available. This facility is more than just a library; it is a community facility and provides recreation for young and old. This is a green building, constructed with water tanks in the back to collect rainwater, used to flush the toilets, and solar panels on the roof that provides for all its electricity needs.

The library has a fully equipped computer room with space for learners to study and do research. An Early Childhood Development section has been installed and can be used by crèches and parents to help teach toddlers basic skills. There is also a hall facility, which the community can use for meetings and special events. One of the more unique features in the new library is the dedicated section for the visually impaired. Facilities for the visually impaired are being installed by the Provincial Library Service at libraries across the province, and the Groendal Library is one of the first to be equipped with this wonderful service.

“I am very proud of this facility and I want to encourage the community to make use of it to the fullest extent. Our Library Services will be partnering with various stakeholders to bring exciting interactive programmes to the library, encouraging a new generation of young readers. This facility will bring an opportunity for learning and knowledge to our residents, and I want to encourage them to use it and care for it so that it will be available for generations to come.” said Mayor van Deventer

Mayor van Deventer focussed her speech on the famous saying by the American Library Association: “Libraries have historically served as our nation’s great equalizers of knowledge”
